Novice Tips: Do You Know the Safe and Efficient Downhill Techniques?

What is the most comfortable and enjoyable part of the cycling process? It is undoubtedly going downhill. However, there have been frequent downhill accidents during cycling recently. In addition to the high speed, there are also issues related to personal skills. Here are some safe and efficient downhill techniques and key points, hoping to be helpful to novice cyclists and improve the safety of going downhill!

๐Ÿ”˜ Lower the Center of Gravity
When going downhill, lowering the center of gravity can enhance the stability of the descent. There are several key points in terms of posture:
โ‘  Sit on the rear part of the saddle and maintain a stable sitting position. (Sitting on the rear part can be more efficient during emergency braking and prevent the front wheel from locking up and causing a "face plant.")
โ‘ก Hold the lower part of the drop handlebars. When braking, your hands are closer to the brake levers, resulting in a faster and more direct braking response.
โ‘ข Slightly bend your elbows inward, keep your chest as parallel to the ground as possible and close to the top tube. This posture can minimize wind resistance to the greatest extent and increase the downhill speed.

๐Ÿ”˜ Slow Down Before the Curve
When a curve appears ahead during the downhill ride, you should brake and slow down in advance, and raise the inner foot to improve the stability of cornering.
The reason for slowing down in advance is that, first, it can prevent you from being unable to turn when entering the curve at a too high speed and being thrown to the outside of the curve. Second, if you brake when you feel the speed is too high after entering the curve, it is very likely to cause fishtailing or rolling over.
Raising the inner foot is to maintain the center of gravity and prevent slipping towards the inside of the curve.

๐Ÿ”˜ Take the Largest Turning Radius
Choosing the correct cornering line when going downhill and turning can improve the cornering efficiency and reduce speed loss. The correct cornering line is: stay close to the outside of the road before the curve, keep close to the inside of the curve after entering the curve, and then move to the outermost side of the road to exit the curve after passing the center of the curve.
Under this route, the turning amplitude of the handlebars and the braking amplitude are the smallest, allowing you to pass the curve at the maximum speed. But remember: when cornering on a two-way lane, do not cross into the opposite lane!

Finally, remind everyone: Go downhill according to your own ability, safety first, and don't compete blindly!
