Road Bike Accessories | Do You Know How Many Types of Common Disc Brake Road Bike Thru-Axles There Are?

A few years ago, there was an explosive growth in disc brake road bikes. Nowadays, disc brakes are becoming more and more common. As an important accessory of disc brake road bikes, how many styles and specifications does the thru-axle have? Let's take a look one by one:

1. Integrated Handle Thru-Axle

This is the most basic form of the thru-axle. The axle and the handle are fixed as one and cannot be separated. When fixing the wheel set, it is directly tightened on the rear fork of the frame.
Advantages: It is very convenient to use and disassemble. You can remove it and go immediately.
Disadvantages: The overall weight is relatively large (because it includes the handle). Therefore, with the current trend of pursuing lightweight, the usage of this type of thru-axle is gradually decreasing.

2. Handleless Thru-Axle

This is not a handleless thru-axle in the true sense. Instead, the "handle" and the thru-axle rod are separated. The "handle" here can be a 6mm hex key or a set of hex key combination tools.
Advantages: It can reduce the weight of the bike, and the axle head is completely embedded in the frame, which is highly aesthetic.
Disadvantages: You may need to carry relevant tools with you when going out to assemble and disassemble it.

3. Hidden Handle Thru-Axle

As the name implies, when not in use, the handle is hidden inside the axis and the axle head of the thru-axle rod. When needed, the handle is pulled out to form a handle for assembly and disassembly.
Advantages: It combines aesthetics and practicality, and there is no need to carry a hex key when going out.
Disadvantages: Only a few brands use this type of thru-axle, and the replacement cost is relatively high.
